Attack by Russian cyber espionage group

Synopsis

In September 2016, the agency disclosed that a Russian cyber espionage group had illegally gained access to their Administration and Management System database via an International Olympic Committee account created for the Rio 2016 Games. That access was believed to have been gained after a spear-phishing campaign.

The bad actors accessed athletes' data including confidential medical data (WADA indicated that 11,837 athletes’ information was rendered accessible to the bad actors) and subsequently released the data of 127 athletes to the public along with the threat of releasing more.
