British mobile phone retailer exposes the personal information of over 3 million customers and 1,000 employees

Synopsis

One of the UK's biggest breaches in 2015. Details of almost 2.5 million customers was stolen in August, with almost 90,000 having encrypted credit card information stolen. The company said at the time it had been the victim of a sophisticated cyber attack.

The attack and the company's approach to security was investigated by the industry watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office ("ICO") who fined the company £400,000 after serious security failures placed customer and employee data at risk.
