In April 2017, the healthcare company disclosed that it had suffered a ransomware attack which was discovered when a member of their clinical staff saw an electronic ransom note on a workstation at around 2am on 9th April 2017.
The ransom demanded to receive all private keys for all affected PCs was 24 bitcoins which was valued at that time between $30,000 to $44,000. The company decided not to pay the ransom but the attack still cost the company millions of dollars to remediate.
The attack took down more than 6,000 computers and forced the medical center to work for six weeks with paper charts and in-person communications.
