The Onion phishing attack

Synopsis

In May 2013, the satirical news publication suffered a cyber attack where employees were targeted with phishing emails by members of the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA).

The SEA used the access to post content to the organisation's official social media channels, such as, insults aimed at the United Nations, Israel, and Syrian rebels. The attack persisted for a few days until the organisation was able to successfully counter the attacker's techniques and gain sole control once more of their media and information assets.

In May 2018, two Syrian men were charged with offenses relating to participating in a conspiracy to engage in computer hacking as members of the Syrian Electronic Army.
