Unauthorized copy of database containing sensitive information in the possession of former employee

Synopsis

Further evidence that cybersecurity is hard especially when it comes to insider threats and even for those you might reasonably have expected to be on top of it!

In January 2018, the US department confirmed that 247,167 employees as well as witnesses and interviewees were impacted by a data breach conducted by a former employee. Officials discovered the breach in May 2017 but took until January 2018 to confirm it to those affected and publicly, attributing the delay to a complex investigation of the compromised data.

The number of people being investigated during the period of 2002-2014 who were affected by the data loss remains undisclosed. However, for the impacted employees, their Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and many other details were compromised.
